Prepare Yourselves - Medicaid Redeterminations Are Coming
When COVID-19 struck in 2020 the state and federal governments made the decision that during the public health emergency no one would be kicked off of Medicaid, for any reason. The emergency order is still in place but will likely end sooner rather than later. It is renewed for 90 days at a time, and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has said that they will provide a 60 days notice for when they will no longer renew the order.
The result of all of this is that there are many people currently on Medicaid who would not be eligible under normal circumstances. Perhaps they sold an exempt asset like their home or they inherited money. Once the emergency order ends each state will need to determine how they will deal with what is expected to be an enormous workload in sorting through who is still eligible and who is not. Sadly, when things like this occur it is not uncommon for people to fall through the cracks which could result in some people losing their eligibility in error.
